God is zealous

“The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this” 2 Kings 19:31

When my kids were babies I loved scrapbooking. I would have three prints of each picture developed so I could make three scrapbooks – one for each of us. I bought stickers, acid-free paper, punches, markers and every kind of scissors and circle cutters. That passion rolled into the idea of saving money by making my own cards. So I bought rubber stamps and ink and glitter – you get the idea. A few years ago I sold the entire set because I hadn’t used it in years.

In the beginning, I was zealous. I dreamed of my children as adults flipping through the photo albums I had hand made for them. But times changed. I changed. We moved to digital cameras and I found it was easier to organize and display my photos on a screen rather than paper.

God is a zealous God

To have zeal is to have passion, to be diligently devoted to something. God is zealous which means He is fully committed to what He plans. He is in it 100% – all the way to the end. He doesn’t get tired, bored or overwhelmed. Quitting isn’t in His character.  Unlike my scrapbooking adventures, God never changes.

I recently had a conversation with a friend. He said he was glad that I had a personal relationship with God, but He didn’t view God that way. He believes in God. But he feels God made the world and then sits up in heaven watching us like a player of the Sims video game. When I looked at the antonyms for zealous (apathetic, cold, unconcerned, indifferent) it became clear my friend didn’t believe God was zealous.

God calls us to be zealous.

I can easily get all fired up about something – a careless word spoken or rudeness. God has been helping me to turn that passion into honoring Him and loving others instead.  When I chose to set my mind on God that changes my perspective.  I’m going to be zealous. The question is what am I going to be zealous about?

Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace. Rom 8:5-6

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Rom 12:10-12

God’s unending love

We are at the end of our  A-Z journey of God’s characteristics.  As we wrap up today I want to close with some words from Romans 8 that describe how much God loves each of us.  Thank you for joining me, I pray God’s richest blessings on you as you walk with the King and be a blessing!

If God is for us, who can be against us?  He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Do you have any hobbies? How about past hobbies that have fallen by the wayside? Are you zealous by nature? If not, I would wonder what being zealous for God would look like for you.  Leave a comment below.

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the opportunity to reflect on who you are. I thank you for each one who has joined me on the journey through the alphabet. I pray you would bless them and strength them. I pray your face will shine upon them and give them grace. May we all be zealous for you. As you have loved us, may we love others lavishly. We pray these things for your glory. In Jesus name, Amen.

I see what you did there, with ‘zealous’. We writers must be creative!

I used to garden a lot and will again when I own a home again. I have been renting since I moved to Ecuador in 2013 and have become zealous about helping people and animals here. Thanks so much for stopping by my Water post.

Congratulations on a successful A to Z!

It’s good to give passion to one’s endeavors. Do you still have the scrapbooks?
