When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
The room is completely dark, the music is playing softly and one candle is lite. The flame is passed to the next candle and then the next – until the entire room has a soft glow. I love the visual reminder of the power of light during a candlelight service.
Darkness by definition is the absence of light. Jesus came as the light of the world. He brings hope, freedom and eternal life through the truths of His Word. Like a moon reflects the light of the sun, we as Christ followers reflect the light of Jesus.
Jesus is our source of light
Jesus says if we follow Him, we won’t walk in darkness but will have the light of life. What a difference a flashlight can make on a dark night. Jesus is our flashlight – promising to be with us, to guide and direct us when we follow Him.
We reflect Jesus’ light
As a natural result of following Jesus, we will be a light to those around us. The moon doesn’t do anything to make itself reflect light. It just stays close to the light of the sun. (Matt. 5:14-16)
How do we reflect Christ’s light?
I think it looks different for everyone. For me, I reflect Christ or I reflect my selfish desires depending on what I set my mind on and where I spend my time. There was a season in my life that when I would stub my toe the first word to pop into my mind wasn’t a good one. I found when I stopped putting those words in my mind through certain tv shows and music, my mind didn’t jump unprompted to them.
The same has been true the other way. When I spend time in the morning reading my Bible, praying, and memorizing verses I notice God’s power giving me the strength to be more gracious or kind when the day gets harried.
And, sometimes it just comes down to a choice. Am I going to choose God’s way or my way? It seems so opposite – I think I will be happy if I look out for #1, but when I love others well and am compassionate and kind I find more peace and a deeper sense of contentedness.
Light dispels darkness. So when Jesus light shines into our lives we are changed and then we are a light to those around us.
How do you stay close to the light of Christ?
Thank you, Jesus, for being the light of the world. Thank you for being my light. I pray you would shine brightly through me as I draw near to you. I recognize it is all you working in and through me. I want to shine for you. I lay down my selfish choices and chose to bask in your presence. May I love others lavishly, forgive freely and to extend your grace and kindness. Amen.
