G – God is great

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Is 55:8-9

When I was six years old I wore a 6X dress. I remember that because one Saturday morning my mom decided we were going to clean my bedroom. She had pulled all the papers, books, clothes and toys from under my bed, dresser, and closet into a pile in the middle of the room.

For each item my mom would try and put into the donation bag I would protest that it was my FAVORITE drawing, toy etc. This went on for about twenty minutes until the situation escalated as my mom picked up a sundress that I loved. When she tried to put it into the donation bag I burst into tears, threw my arms across the remaining pile of what-not and cried, “You are giving away my favorite things! This dress is my faaaavorrrrrite because it’s the same size as I am years old!”. I think my mom gave up at that point, sneaking the outgrown dress out of the house with the rest of my treasures when I wasn’t home.

I kind of feel the same way going through the series “Who is God?” Each day I am in awe and amazement at how great our God is.  On day one almighty was my favorite character trait. Then day two came and I loved bread of life. On day three I was so glad God is my comforter. Can’t forget Deliverer – now that’s definitely my favorite. Then there was Faithful – where would I be without God’s faithfulness?

A bit of me still wishes I had that sun dress with the elastic bodice. But lest you worry, I have grown up to be somewhat of a minimalist and thankfully have learned the value of space and simplicity. Going through this series has brought a bit of that little girl in me out – God is so good, so amazing, so great I’m glad I don’t have to pick a few character traits to define Him. I can let my mind swirl around in the vastness of Him knowing that I won’t even begin to understand a facet of Him this side of heaven.

How about you? What character trait of God stands out the most to you?

A few of my favorite verses on God’s greatness

Is. 40:28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.

Jer 10:6 There is none like You, O LORD; You are great, and great is Your name in might.

Psalm 147:5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.

God, you are great. You are the greatest of the great. You are almighty, you are the bread of life, my comforter, and my deliverer. You are eternal and faithful. Great are you Lord. You are holy and infinite, you are just. You are King of Kings and Lord of Lords. You are merciful and mighty to save. Your name is above all other names. You are omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent. You are the Prince of Peace. You quicken us to you. You are my refuge and my redeemer. You are my sanctifier. You are truth, unwavering in love. You are wise and eXalted. Yahweh, you are zealous. You are the first and the last the beginning and the end. For through you and by you all things are created and exist. We worship you, we adore you, our Savior and our God. To yours be the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The trait that came to mind was humility, that He would sully Himself with us and for us.
